The Nikon L35AF2 (1985) is the direct successor to the L35AF "Pikaichi," Nikon's first autofocus compact. The core specification is unchanged: fixed 35mm f/2.8 Nikkor lens (5 elements, 4 groups), active autofocus, programmed AE, built-in flash, polycarbonate body, AA battery power. The update was primarily cosmetic - revised body styling, minor ergonomic refinements - rather than a fundamental redesign. Like its predecessor, it was sold in Japan as "Pikaichi" (the second iteration) and in North American markets under the Nikon One Touch branding. The L35AF2 occupies a smaller collector footprint than the original L35AF; the first-generation Pikaichi tends to attract more attention, leaving the L35AF2 as the more affordable option for photographers who simply want the lens and the AA-battery convenience.

Nikon introduced the L35AF2 two years after the original L35AF, following a common update cycle for compact cameras of the mid-1980s. The Japanese market "Pikaichi" name carried forward; the North American "One Touch" branding was also retained. Production overlapped with the introduction of the L35AW (1986), a weatherproof variant, and continued alongside the expanding Nikon AF zoom compact lineup. By 1989 the fixed-lens L35 series was wound down as Nikon shifted the compact segment toward zoom-equipped models. The L35AF2 was not followed by a direct successor; the 35mm fixed-lens compact line ended with it.
The L35AF2's primary appeal today is the same as the L35AF's: a genuine Nikkor 35/2.8 optic in a pocketable AA-battery body, purchased at prices well below equivalent Contax T2 or Olympus mju-II compact options. The second-generation body is mechanically equivalent to the first. For shooters, the distinction between L35AF and L35AF2 is largely irrelevant - buy whichever example is in better condition at a better price.
For collectors, the L35AF2 is the less-desirable sibling: the original "Pikaichi" branding, styling, and first-to-market status give the 1983 model a collector premium the 1985 revision does not share. This makes the L35AF2 the more rational user purchase.
Lens is fixed. The 35mm f/2.8 Nikkor (5 elements, 4 groups) is the same optical formula carried over from the original L35AF. Built-in flash with auto-activation. Original wrist strap. No accessory system beyond the standard Nikon compact range (cases, straps).
