The Canon EOS Elan 7 (2000, sold as **EOS 30** in Europe, **EOS 7** in Japan) was Canon's mid-tier AF body — sitting below the EOS-3 in the lineup but with much of the same technology. 7-point autofocus, 35-zone evaluative metering, full PASM modes, deliberately quiet film advance and shutter (the **whisper drive** marketing claim was real — the Elan 7 is among the quietest film SLRs ever made). The "**E**" version (Elan 7E / EOS 30) added eye-control AF; the "**N**" suffix (Elan 7N / EOS 30N, 2004) refined the body cosmetics.

Released October 2000. The Elan line replaced the Rebel-tier midmarket body. Variants: Elan 7 (no eye control), Elan 7E (eye control), Elan 7N (2004 refresh), Elan 7NE (2004 refresh with eye control). Production ran seven years until 2007 — Canon's last consumer-tier film body.
The Elan 7 is one of the cheapest "modern" Canon film bodies in 2026. Used prices run $80–200. The whisper-drive shutter is genuinely quiet (street photographers love it), eye-control AF on the 7E variant works as well as on the EOS-3 (look at the AF point you want, camera focuses there), and the body is lightweight at 545 g.
For Canon EF lens owners — especially those with modern L-series glass — the Elan 7 is a great way to shoot film without committing to a $500 EOS-3 body. The trade-off vs the EOS-3 is the slower flash sync (1/125s vs 1/200s), pentamirror-equivalent finder dimness on some bodies, and slightly less robust build.
