The Voigtlander Brillant (1932) is often categorized alongside TLRs but is technically a pseudo-TLR: it uses a **brilliant finder** -- a separate optical viewfinder mounted above the taking lens -- rather than a true reflex ground-glass system. The taking lens is fixed-focus (or has very limited zone-focus adjustment on some versions), and the body is largely constructed from **bakelite**, making it lighter and cheaper than the all-metal competitors from Rollei and from Voigtlander's own higher-end Superb. The Brillant was Voigtlander's mass-market entry into the 120-format camera segment, targeting buyers for whom a Rolleicord or Superb was out of reach. It produced 6x6 cm frames on 120 roll film.

Voigtlander introduced the Brillant in the early 1930s as a companion to -- and a step below -- the Superb TLR. While the Superb offered a genuine reflex viewing system, coupled focus, and a Heliar or Skopar taking lens, the Brillant used a brilliant-finder optical system that gave the visual impression of a TLR without the mechanical complexity of a true reflex mirror and ground glass assembly. The bakelite body construction reduced manufacturing cost significantly. Voigtlander produced multiple variants of the Brillant across the 1930s and into the postwar period, with incremental changes to lens and shutter specifications. The camera competed primarily with other budget 120 cameras of the period -- Agfa box cameras, the Zeiss Ikon Ikonta -- rather than directly against the Rolleicord.
The Brillant occupies an important position in the history of amateur photography precisely because it was not a TLR -- it was a camera that looked like one, packaged the visual language of the Rollei form factor into a bakelite body, and sold it at a price that box-camera buyers could consider. This was a deliberate design choice: the brilliant finder gives a bright, upright, unreversed image (unlike a true reflex ground glass, which reverses left and right), which Voigtlander marketed as an advantage for composition.
For collectors, the Brillant is interesting as a counterexample to the Rolleicord and Rolleiflex: it demonstrates how much of the TLR's value to the photographer came from the genuine reflex viewing system, not just the square format and the waist-level posture. Images from a well-set Brillant in good light are entirely acceptable on 6x6 film; in poor light or at close range, the fixed-focus lens and absent reflex system show their limitations clearly.
The camera is also noteworthy as one of relatively few prewar German cameras with a bakelite body -- a material more associated with British and American cameras of the period.
