Toyo's 4x5 field camera line evolved through several variants from the early 1980s onward. The 45A (introduced 1981) established the platform, and the line was refined over subsequent years. The 45A-II appeared in the 1990s with incremental refinements to the standard locks and focusing mechanism.
The 45CX sits within this lineage, likely representing either an export or market-specific designation or a simplified variant configured for a different price point or feature set than the full 45A. Toyo's naming conventions across its field camera line have not always followed a straightforward chronological progression, and some designations vary between the Japanese domestic market and export configurations.
Toyo View as a company produced both field cameras (the 45-series) and monorail studio cameras (the G-series and 810G), positioning itself across the full range of professional large-format needs. The field cameras were aimed at location photographers; the monorails at studio and commercial work.
The Toyo 45 series, including the CX, represents the mature phase of Japanese large-format manufacturing. By the time these cameras were produced, Japanese precision manufacturing had closed the quality gap with German makers (Linhof) while maintaining a substantial price advantage.
For contemporary photographers, the Toyo 45CX offers the practical core of 4x5 field work - full movements, Linhof lensboard compatibility, aluminum durability - at a used price that is typically lower than either a Wista metal 45 or a Linhof Technika. The Technika lensboard standard ensures that a large pool of used lenses is available without requiring special adaptation.
The CX also benefits from Toyo's relatively robust parts and service network compared to some competitors; Toyo View has maintained a longer presence in the market, and some service capability has persisted.
The Toyo 45CX accepts Linhof Technika-format lensboards, compatible with the full range of Copal and Compur shutter-mounted large-format lenses:
