The Canon EOS 5 (1992, sold as **EOS A2 / A2E** in North America, **EOS 5 QD** in Japan) was Canon's first SLR with **Eye Control autofocus** — a small infrared sensor near the eyepiece tracks the user's gaze and selects the AF point being looked at. The EOS A2E variant has the eye control feature; the A2 variant doesn't (just the same body without the IR sensors). 5-point AF, 16-zone evaluative meter, 1/8000s shutter, 1/200s flash sync, full PASM.

Released 1992 as Canon's mid-tier prosumer SLR. The Eye Control feature was first introduced here, before being refined on the EOS 3 (1998) and EOS-1V (2000). Production ran 6 years until 1998 when the Elan 7 / EOS 30 took over the prosumer slot.
For 2026 buyers, the EOS 5 / A2E is an extremely cheap entry into eye-control AF Canon film. Used at $80–200. Same EF lens compatibility as any EOS body; the eye-control feature works after calibration. Trade-off vs EOS 3: 5-point AF (vs 45-point), older meter, 2CR5 battery (still available but pricier than CR123A).
Full Canon EF lens system. BP-50 vertical battery grip (rare). Speedlite 540EZ / 580EX-II flashes for ETTL.
