The Yashica 635 MX is a variant of the Yashica 635 twin-lens reflex camera, which occupied a unique position in Yashica's TLR lineup by offering compatibility with both 120 roll film (6x6cm, 12 exposures) and 35mm film via an accessory adapter insert. The 635 designation refers to the camera's dual-format capability: 6x6 on 120 and 35mm on standard cartridges.

The Yashica 635 was introduced in the late 1950s as an unusual dual-format proposition in the TLR market. Most TLRs of the period were committed 120-format cameras; the 635 differentiated itself with an accessory kit that allowed 35mm cartridges to be loaded using insert frames that masked the film gate and redirected the takeup spool path. The resulting 35mm exposures on the 635 were 24x24mm square rather than the standard 24x36mm, using a portion of the film area.
The MX variant reflects a shutter upgrade within the production run, moving to the Copal-MX unit that provided more reliable flash synchronization across both M (bulb) and X (electronic) contact modes. The 635 line was discontinued as the Yashica Mat series absorbed demand from photographers seeking a more capable Yashica TLR.
The 635's dual-format capability was genuinely unusual among production TLRs. While the 35mm square-format output is a curiosity rather than a primary use case today, the camera's 120 performance is fully competitive with other mid-tier Yashica TLRs. The Yashinon 80/3.5 is a solid Tessar-type lens capable of good sharpness stopped down to f/5.6 and f/8.
For collectors, the complete 635 kit with its 35mm adapter inserts is more desirable than the body alone. A complete kit in working order commands a modest premium over a body-only example.
The Yashica 635 MX accepts Bay 1 accessories shared with other Yashica TLRs:
