Profile notes
CineStill BwXX (Double-X) is the still-photography version of Kodak Eastman Double-X 5222, a panchromatic black-and-white cinema film with roots going back to 1959. CineStill professionally respools the stock into 135 (36-exposure) cartridges. Unlike CineStill's color offerings, BwXX has no anti-halation layer in the original formulation (Double-X is a double-sided emulsion with no separate backing layer), so no Premoval process is needed. The film is rated EI 250 in daylight and EI 200 under tungsten light, with a usable range of EI 64–1600. Developed in CineStill D96, Kodak D-76, HC-110, or virtually any standard B&W developer. The acetate base and high-silver emulsion produce rich blacks, broad tonal range, and a classic cinematic quality. CineStill introduced BwXX in 135 format; 120 format was added in 2021.
